Robin Locke Nagele and Mark Mattioli Present in Separate Sessions at PBI's Health Law Institute 2023 

Robin Locke Nagele and Mark L. Mattioli presented in separate sessions at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute's (PBI) Health Law Institute 2023. This year's event took place from March 14 and 15, 2023 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Ms. Nagele and Mr. Mattioli also served on the Planning Committee for this year's Health Law Institute.

On March 14, 2023 at 11:20 am ET, Mr. Mattioli presented, "End of the Public Health Emergency: What Does It Mean for Providers and Patients?" He addressed the upcoming end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency and its impact on both providers and patients. Mr. Mattioli covered federal reimbursement issues, coverage for testing and treatment, the effects on insurance and coverage, FDA and emergency use, PREP Act loss of immunity, and the effect on state waivers. 

On March 15, 2023 at 9:40 am ET, Ms. Nagele presented, "Medical Staff Issues," and covered the basics of medical staff governance, credentialing, peer review, corrective actions and fair hearings, applicable privileges and reporting requirements, with reference to federal and state regulation, accreditation standards and case law.

On March 15, 2023 at 2:20 pm ET, Ms. Nagele presented, "APP/NPP Evolution: Positives and Negatives for Physician Practices." Recent years have seen a significant expansion in services provided by Advanced Practice Professionals (APP), spurred in part by COVID-19. In the private practice setting, APPs/NPPs extend the reach of physician services, and are often able to so economically and profitably, but many challenges remain. This session explored (i) the causes and benefits of the expansion in APP/NPP services, (ii) practice limitations post-COVID, (iii) impact of changes in the Medicare Fee Schedule, and (iv) fraud and abuse risks in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
